Ban calls for global leadership: "We must do more, not less"

Ban Ki-moonUnited Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appealed today for new leadership on issues ranging from the crisis in financial markets, to climate change, to dramatic increases in the price of food during opening remarks at the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
 
"We face a global financial crisis. We face a global energy crisis. A global food crisis," Ban said. "To put it bluntly, we face a development emergency -- and we must do more, not less. We must do more to help our fellow human beings weather the gathering storm."

President Bush: "The world needs a confident and effective UN"
President Bush at UNUnited States President George W. Bush gave his final address to the United Nations General Assembly today.
 
"The United Nations and other multilateral organizations are needed more than ever," Bush told delegates. "The world in the 21st century needs a confident and effective UN."
 
Praising UN work in Afghanistan and Iraq, he added, "Whatever the disagreements in this body over Iraq, we should celebrate the progress being made there today."

UN forum addresses Africa's development needs
UN High-Level MeetingWorld leaders meeting at the United Nations have underscored the urgency of finding solutions to the major challenges facing Africa, and have recommitted themselves to a global partnership to help the continent halve poverty, illiteracy and other socio-economic ills by 2015.
 
Member states participating in the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on Africa's development needs also stressed that poverty eradication, particularly in Africa, is the "greatest global challenge facing the world today," according to a political declaration adopted at the end of the day-long event.
 
 
 
Full transparency from Iran on nuclear activities needed, UN agency chief says
IAEAThe head of the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called on Iran to be fully transparent about its nuclear activities, six years after the agency began efforts to clarify those activities.
 
Director General Mohamed ElBaradei told the IAEA's Board of Governors that the agency seeks to focus on Iran's nuclear activities, which its officials have stated is for peaceful purposes, but some other countries contend is driven by military ambitions.
 
 
 
UN extends Afghan security force for another year
UN Security CouncilThe United Nations Security Council has unanimously extended the mission of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan for another year and called for it to be strengthened in the face of increased violence and terrorism from the Taliban, al-Qaida and drug smugglers.
 
ISAF, which now has 47,600 personnel on the ground, was established after United States-led forces ousted the Taliban regime in late 2001 to help the then-interim authorities maintain security across the impoverished nation.
 
The 12-month extension begins on October 13.
 
 
 
UN celebrates International Day of Peace
International Day of PeaceUnited Nations celebrated the International Day of Peace on Sunday, September 21 with the traditional peace bell ringing ceremony at UN headquarters in New York
 
During the event, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent a text message for peace, as part of a UN campaign that urged cell phone users to compose peace messages to be published on a website and delivered to world leaders gathered for the General Assembly this week.
 
 
 
Washington commemorates 60 years of UN peacekeeping with Capitol Hill event
UN Peacekeeping 60th AnniversaryThe United Nations Information Center in Washington, in collaboration with the Better World Campaign, will host a photo exhibit and reception on Capitol Hill to commemorate 60 years of UN peacekeeping.
 
An information fair featuring Washington offices of UN organizations will precede the reception.
 
The event is a salute to supporters of UN peacekeeping, from Members of Congress and their staff, to NGO advocates, to countries that staff, equip and supply 20 countries at UN peacekeeping missions around the world. Currently, 110,000 "blue helmets" from 118 nations are deployed in some of the world's most dangerous places.
 
Rep. William Delahunt (D-MA), Prince Zeid Ra'ad Al-Hussein (Jordan's ambassador to the United States), James Warlick of the United States Department of State and others will speak.
 
The event will take place in the foyer of the Rayburn House Office Building on Thursday, Sept. 25 from 4 to 6 pm.
