UN bomb victims memorialThe United Nations will continue supporting the government and people of Iraq, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs B. Lynn Pascoe said today in op-ed marking the five-year anniversary of the attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad.

Pascoe writes, "Some have called August 19, 2003 the 'end of innocence' for the UN, proof that the world body could no longer feel safe behind its iconic blue flag and noble intentions alone."

The suicide bombing killed the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq Sergio Vieira de Mello and 21 others. More than 150 were also injured in the attack.
