Secretary-General
to Witness Climate Change First-hand in South America,
Antarctica
Brazil,
Chile, among stops
|
United
Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will make an
official visit to South America and Antarctica this week
where he will take a first-hand look at efforts to combat
climate change and deforestation,
Mr.
Ban will make stops in Chile, Argentina, Brazil
and Antarctica to call attention to the effects of
climate change.
In
Chile, Mr. Ban will attend the Ibero-American Summit.
From
there he will go to Punta Arenas in Chile where
he will meet with residents who live under a hole in the
ozone layer and also to Chile's Torres del Paine National
Park, where climate change's impact on glaciers is
dramatic.
He
will also visit Antarctica, where he will be briefed by
scientists at research stations.
Following
the visit to Antarctica, Mr. Ban will travel to Brazil
where he will visit an ethanol plant and meet with
researchers and indigenous groups in the country's Amazon
region. The trip will highlight Brazil's recent
achievements in fighting deforestation and promoting
sustainable forest management.
Mr.
Ban will also meet with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio
Lula da Silva and Argentina's President-elect
Cristina Fernández de Kirchner during this visit.
Mr.
Ban's trip is ahead of a scheduled visit to Valencia,
Spain on November 17, where the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will be
releasing its latest report. The IPCC was recently awarded
the Nobel Peace Prize for its climate change efforts.
Mr.
Ban's trip comes one month before a major climate
change conference to be held in Bali,
Indonesia. Delegates from across the world are expected to
try to hammer out a successor agreement to the Kyoto
Protocol, which contains legally binding targets for
reducing emissions but expires in 2012.

Under-Secretary-General
for
Peacekeeping Operations
Jean-Marie
Guéhenno of France was appointed Under-Secretary-General
for Peacekeeping Operations in October 2000.
Mr. Guéhenno has a vast experience in the field of
diplomacy, defense and international relations, as well as
in administration and management.
He
spent a part of his career in the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs of France as director of the
policy planning staff and as Ambassador to the Western
European Union.
He has overseen the largest-ever
growth in UN peacekeeping and has led efforts to implement
the Secretary-General's commitment to zero tolerance for
sexual abuse by UN peacekeepers.
"I think that everybody
understands the importance of having effective
disciplinary processes in the United Nations, everyone
understands how much damage cases of misconduct have done
to the good name of the UN, how it hurts us," Guéhenno
said
earlier this year.
